Rename File Names Quickly and Easily on a Mac

Do you have a folder of images that you would like to rename into a sequential order?

The OSX finder is somewhat limited in the file renaming department… Which is why I love this tool called NameChanger. I often have a folder of a bunch of images that I need to link up in a photo gallery.

My workflow is usually something like this.

  1. Collect images in a folder
  2. Rename all images inside the folder to be in sequential order using NameChanger (imageGallery-1.jpg, imageGallery-2.jpg, imageGallery-3.jpg, and so on.)
  3. Then I open the folder in Fireworks and do a batch resize and save the originals as a backup.
  4. I also add “-thumb” to the image names with Fireworks
  5. Upload the images and link to them inside the HTML document. Each link will be the same except for its number. This sure beats having to change the src, alt, href, and title for each image.

Not only is it free and easy to use, but it works.

You can watch a demo on how it works here.
